Distant Highway Sounds – Lake Shore Drive

I’ve been recording all over Chicago for an upcoming Collected Transients library. The other night, around 2:00 a.m., I went out with the plan to record in a tunnel that ran underneath Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive. I was hoping to capture the resonance of the cars whizzing by overhead, but as I approached the tunnel, I heard snoring. I walked through to see the tunnel was already occupied.

Instead of seeing how that situation panned out, I decided to walk toward the lake.and figure something else out. The further out I got, I was amazed how (relatively) quiet it was for Chicago. Not quiet in the sense that there wasn’t much sound… but that there was almost nothing going on. No people, no planes, no waves… The only prominent sound was a medium-distant Lake Shore Drive. So, that’s what I recorded!

Sorry for the video quality… my phone didn’t do so well in the dark!
